Grief Connections, the foundation program at Gerard’s House, offers after-school-based grief support groups for children, teens and their caregivers. Founded by bereaved parents, this program creates a safe and nurturing space for young people to connect with their peers who have experienced the death of a loved one. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model, we know New Mexico ranks second in the nation for childhood bereavement, with 1 in 7 children experiencing the death of a parent or sibling by the age 18. Through shared stories and compassionate listening, participants are reminded that they are not alone in their grief. Whether choosing to share open or simply listen, each young person is met with understanding and respect.
The program also provides support for adults, particularly parents and caregivers, recognizing that healing is more effective when it includes the entire family. When adults are given the space to process their own grief, they are better able to support the children in their lives. These groups offer validation, connection, and tools for navigating the emotional challenges of loss. In this shared space, many discover the comfort of being understood and the strength to move forward.
