While many consider Gerard’s House a children’s grief center, we also provide ongoing and therapeutic support groups to grieving adults in English and Spanish. In 2023 this work expanded to meet the increasing needs of adults in our post pandemic world. We understand that children are better served when the adults in their lives are also supported. However, our adult groups are not only for those with children participating in our programs, but for anyone in the community who has experienced the death of – or separation from – a loved one. We see how these programs change lives, especially for those who feel their own life has ended with the death of – or separation from – a loved one. Adults often share during intakes calls that there is nowhere they feel safe enough to take off their “masks” and fall apart. By providing culturally attuned, judgment-free grief support, we create spaces every week where it is not only safe to fall apart—but where adults often find that, in allowing themselves to do so, they begin to feel hopeful about their futures again.
